Our Lady of Lourdes Deaf Club is situated at 2 Summerhill Grove. Sponsored
by the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a variety of services are provided
from these premises.
There is a Social Club, open to people of all denominations, both Deaf
and hearing, every Sunday evening from 7.00pm and at other time when
special events are taking place. There is also a luncheon club on Thursdays
from 11.00am. There is a youth service providing activities for young
deaf people from 5 to 25 years.
It is also a centre for deaf people throughout the region, providing
information and advice about hearing aids, loop systems and other aids
for the hard of hearing: flashing door bells, baby alarms, etc. The centre
runs classes in Sign Language and Deaf Awareness.
The premises are the head office for the Diocesan Deaf Service which
aims to provide for deaf people all the pastoral services which hearing
people receive throughout their parishes. Mass is celebrated in Sign
Language every Sunday at 6.20pm and on other special occassions. The
Cathedral's own Fr Kinlen is the chaplain.
