Who can Marry at the Cathedral?
Both parties must be free to marry and the Catholic party must either live in the parish of St. Mary's or attend Mass regularly at the Cathedral.

Legal Requirements
You are required by Civil Law to register your intention to marry at a Registrar's Office. A minimum of 17 days and a maximum of 12 months notice is required by the Registrar. We recommend that you give notice to the Registrar as soon as possible after you have confirmed the date of your wedding at the Cathedral. You will need to make an appointment. If you and your partner live in the same registration district, you are obliged to visit the Registrar together. If you live in different registration regions, you must inform the Registrar of Marriages in both areas. Each Registrar's office will issue a Superintendent Registrar's Certificate which you must give to the priest arranging your wedding.

Church Requirements
A few months before your wedding one of the Cathedral priests will complete a Prenuptial Enquiry for with you. This will establish that at least one of you is Catholic, that you are both free to marry in the Catholic Church and that both of you understand the commitment you are making to each other in the marriage ceremony. If you are a member of another Church, you will be required to obtain a Certificate of Baptism from the Church where you were baptised.

Order of Service
You do not have to go to the expense of producing an Order of Service - wedding service booklets and hymn books are provided by the Cathedral. However, if you require an Order of Service, the priest will be very happy to advise and help you compile it.

The Wedding Ceremony
You are invited to plan your wedding ceremony with the priest. You may choose the Scripture Readings and compile the Intercessions for your ceremony. The priest will help you do this.

Music
The Catholic Church requires that music during your wedding ceremony should express the faith of the Church and be appropriate to the celebration.

You are welcome to choose the music and hymns for your ceremony but we recommend that you do so in consultation with the Cathedral Organist who is highly qualified and will be very happy to discuss your music requirements.

For all weddings, funerals and baptisms in the Cathedral where the organ is required, a fee is payable to the Cathedral Organist. If you have a relative or friend who wishes to play the organ at your wedding, the Cathedral Organist must receive his proper remuneration. This will not apply in those instances where the Cathedral Organist is not available.

The playing of pre-recorded music in the Cathedral is not allowed - the only music permitted in the church is 'live' music.

Videoing
If you intend to have a video made of your wedding in the Cathedral, we will need to know that a proper video licence has been obtained. If your wedding is being videoed by a commercial firm, it already should have a current annual MCPS wedding video licence - you must ask if it does and, if so, whether or not the firm has exceeded its allocation of 15 weddings per licence.

If a member of your family is videoing the ceremony, you will need to obtain your own MCPS individual wedding video licence, which currently costs £7.50 and the Cathedral can help you by providing an application form.

Ushers
The principal duties of Ushers are

  • to welcome and direct your guests to their appropriate places in the Cathedral;
  • to provide your guests with the necessary Service sheets and booklets;
  • to collect Service sheets and booklets after the ceremony.

Please note that confetti is not allowed and the help of the ushers with this greatly appreciated.

Parking
Some couples like to reserve the parking bays outside the Cathedral on Clayton Street West. If you wish to reserve the spaces you should contact the relevant department at the Civic Centre. Please note that a charge of around £40 will be made for this.

Times of Services
For Saturdays, weddings are celebrated at 11.00am and 1.00pm. Due to other Services, no other times are available on Saturdays.

Fees
Cathedral: £300 (includes administration and Registrar); Organist: £100; Music Group: by arrangement; Flowers: by arrangement.

Rehersal
We recommend that the rehearsal takes place preferably two days before the wedding. Only those directly involved in the ceremony need to attend, e.g. father of the bride, best man, bridesmaid(s) and readers.

Flowers
As an additional service to those getting married at the Cathedral, a wide range of wedding flowers are available to order from the Cathedral Flower Arranging Team. Individual arrangements: altar tray £40, stand or bowl £50, ambo (pulpit) tray £20, 4 pew ends £25, 6 pew ends £35. All of the above with 6 pew ends are available as an inclusive package for £130. Bouquets: bridal from £50, bridesmaid from £30, buttonholes/corsage from £35 for 10.
