On Saturday 25th July three men were ordained to the priesthood in our diocese.
Lee Barrett, 30, from Kenton, Newcastle, David Smith, 40, from Wrekenton,
Gateshead, and Thomas McHale, 39, originally from Baltimore, USA but now
settled in the north-east, were all ordained by Bishop Séamus Cunningham
in St Mary's Cathedral, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The two hour ceremony was the culmination
of six years of study, prayer, and preparation. As a sign that they are now
giving their all to the service of God and the people they lay prostrate
on the floor while the priests and people prayed for them. The Bishop and
other priests then laid hands on their heads, they were clothed in priestly
vestments, their hands anointed with holy oil, and they were given the bread
and wine for the mass which followed.
Fr Lee Barrett will go to Holy Rosary, St John's and St Joseph,
Billingham to assist Fr John Butters. Fr David Smith will be an assistant
to Fr Clement Lee in Darlington, Holy Family, and Fr Tom McHale will go to
St Joseph's, St Anne's and Holy Family in Sunderland to assist Fr Michael
McCoy.
