The Right Reverend Séamus Cunningham, Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, and the priests of the Cathedral, began the celebrations for Passion Sunday by blessing the Palms and processing into the church.

The feast commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem in the days before his Passion. It is also called Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion. The day is marked by the distribution of palm leaves to the assembled worshipers. The palm fronds are blessed and a procession also takes place.
