Bishop Seamus Cunningham - Retirement Mass of Thanksgiving
RETIREMENT MASS - BISHOP SÉAMUS CUNNINGHAM
On Friday evening February 22nd the Cathedral was filled with over 600 people (including 70 priests and 22 deacons) for the Retirement Mass of Thanksgiving for Bishop Seamus.
Father Peter Leighton preached a very witty and moving homily and 9 of Bishop Seamus’ relatives presented the gifts at the offertory. Bishop Seamus’ nephew, Tony Cunningham, gave the first reading and two members of the Cathedral community, Eileen Mitchell and Beryl Mock, gave the second reading and the intercessions. Presentations were made to Bishop Seamus from representative groups including Tyne and Wear Citizens, Youth, Education, Curia and the Council of Laity and these presentations were introduced by Fr Martin Stempczyk.
After the inspiring and moving Mass the celebration continued as guests gathered in the Cathedral courtyard for refreshments.
We give thanks for the devoted ministry of Bishop Seamus to the people of this diocese and offer our prayers and best wishes as he embarks on this new chapter in his life.
