Makin Organ
The Makin organ installed in the Cathedral on 12th December
2006 for a trial period was a full size cathedral organ with 60 stops and
3 manuals: its sister organ served in Peterborough Cathedral for two years
whilst the pipe organ there was cleaned and repaired after a fire. Even
larger Makin Organs are permanently installed in Salford Roman Catholic
Cathedral and in Inverness Cathedral.
Using 24 separate amplifiers and speaker units, the Makin organ offered
the full range and beauty of tone of a large pipe organ, using sampled sound,
effectively the recorded sound of real organ pipes, with no compromises in
sound quality even when all the stops were used at once. The instrument incorporated
the very latest technology
and represented the state of the art in digital organ technology developed
in house by the Makin Research Department.
