'Penny Whistle' Organ
In the early 1980's, dry rot had been found in the church which also
extended into the presbytery and the organ chamber. The only feasible
way of tackling the dry rot was to completely remove the organ.
A storm of protest blew up and many criticisms were printed in letters
to the press. However, since there was no alternative, the work of dismantling
was proceeded with.
Until a new organ could be installed in the church, a small organ was
purchased and was placed against the south wall immediately opposite
where the present organ is situated. This 'penny whistle organ' was used
until the new organ was installed at the end of 1981.
