The Lord Mayor will host Carols for the City in The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas this Wednesday 12 December at 6.00pm. Refreshments will be served at 5.00pm prior to the service and a collection will be taken in aid of two of the Lord Mayor's charities, St Oswald's Hospice and The Rainbow Trust.

Next year the three Catholic secondary schools in Newcastle will host a Mission led by the Youth Ministry Team. In order to begin the preparation for the Mission process and to look at the involvement of parishes, a Mission Launch will take place on Thursday 29th November 7.00pm at St. Charles' Church Hall, Gosforth. For Young Adults 18 - 30 Years: A series of monthly preparation sessions for young adults aged 18 and over who wish to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation has been arranged. The sessions will be led by Fr Marc Lyden–Smith, Fr Dominic White OP, Mia Fox and other guest speakers. The first meeting and introduction will take place on Wednesday 12 December at 7.00pm in the Bede Catholic Chaplaincy, 14 Windsor Terrace, Newcastle upon Tyne NE2 4HE (Just behind the Robinson Library and Civic Centre).
For Young People 14 - 17 Years: A preparation meeting for any young people from the Cathedral parish aged 14 - 17 who wish to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation will take place on Saturday 15 December from 11.00am - 12.00noon in the Winter Chapel, St Dominic's Priory, 41a Red Barns, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 2TP. The course itself will commence in the New Year.

The Ushaw Lecture Series has been organised with the aim of promoting the archival material and heritage items held at the site of the former seminary. The lectures will act also as a lead into the publication of the Treasures of Ushaw College volume. As such, they will explore different aspects of the College's history, and of the surrounding Catholic community more generally, with expert contributors drawn from within and outside the University of Durham. Our Lady & St Anne's Primary School

Congratulations to our Primary School, Our Lady & St Anne's, which has been inspected twice recently. The first inspection by Ofsted judged the school to be a good school overall and outstanding in terms of the behaviour and safety of pupils and also in the children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. The school was also inspected by the diocese and judged to be outstanding overall. The report reads: 'Our Lady & St. Anne's is an outstanding Catholic school. The school is a very inclusive and welcoming community. Collective worship is good, whilst both Catholic Life and Religious Education are outstanding.' Both reports comment on how pupils enjoy their learning in this happy school. Well done to Mr Michael O'Brien (the inspirational Head Teacher) and his fantastic team. All Souls Day - Memorial Candles

While we carry on our daily duties, the lighted candle burns as a constant prayer. The candle 'keeps vigil' in the church while we cannot be present. On All Souls Day, Friday 2 November, candles will burn in the Cathedral in memory of our deceased friends and loved ones. If you would like a candle in memory of a deceased loved one, please take one of the black envelopes at the back of church, follow the instructions on the front of the envelope and return your envelope including your donation via the Sunday offertory plate or hand into Cathedral House.

Fr John Writes: The Bible, the Word of God, written over 2,000 years by hundreds of different authors, prophets and seers, a whole library of literature, containing history, letters, sermons, fables, legends, stories, some historical, some cautionary tales and parables, prayers, Gospels an amalgam of salvation history. Most of us Catholics weren't brought up to read the Bible properly and our Cathedral Scripture Group seeks to guide and instruct our reading and understanding. We're just a small group who meet weekly during School Term times, on Thursday mornings in St. Anne's Convent, Summerhill Grove (behind the Discovery Museum). We start with a cup of tea and a prayer, then spend an hour or more looking at the subsequent Sunday's readings, with the help of commentaries. We end with Mass, and more refreshments. This Term we begin on Thursday 13 September at 10.30am. All are welcome.

Over the weekend of Saturday 16 June - Sunday 17 June we will be joined by Kathryn Turner, Coordinator for Spiritual Formation in the Diocese, who will be offering three sessions on prayer and spirituality. This gives us an opportunity to come together to look at ways of deepening our personal prayer and also to think about how prayer helps us to work together and reach out to others. There are two sessions at St Roberts Church, Cedar Road, Fenham on Saturday 16 June from 10.30am - 12.30pm (Mass at 10am) and later from 1.30 - 3.00pm. There will be a shared table lunch. Kathryn will attend Masses in our deanery then conclude the weekend with a session on Sunday 17 June from 2.30pm - 4.30pm at St Bede's, Whickham View. Everyone is welcome.

An easy/moderate 6.5 mile walk will take place next Sunday 13 May. This will be a circular walk from Riding Mill to Corbridge. Please meet at the entrance road to Riding Mill Railway Station at 10.15am for a 10.30 start. If you are coming from Newcastle take the right turn immediately after passing the 'Duke of Wellington'. The station is several yards further on to your right. Due to the recent inclement weather there are a few muddy sections on this walk so stout footwear is recommended. For those people wanting a shorter walk of about three miles please meet at 12.00 noon at the car park in Corbridge which is situated on the south side of the river alongside the bridge which crosses over the River Tyne.

Cathedral Redevelopment

The next phase of redevelopment work in the Cathedral is due to start on Tuesday 8 May. This will include the construction of a new gallery and the installation of a new pipe organ at the west end of the building. The whole project is likely to take up to thirty weeks in total. Inevitably, there will be some disruption during this period, which will affect the usual opening times, regular weekday Masses and Confessions.

From Tuesday 8 May, and until further notice, the Cathedral will be closed apart from the following exceptions:

The Cathedral will be open as usual on Sundays for Masses at 8.00am, 10.00am, 11.30am & 6.30pm.
Monday - Friday the Cathedral will open at 11.50am for Mass at 12.05pm and will close again immediately after Mass. Please note there will be no weekday 8.00am Mass from Monday 14 May until further notice.
On Saturdays Mass will be at 10.00am.
Confessions: During the redevelopment work the Confessionals at the back of church will not be usable. However, there will be the opportunity for Confessions (in the area near to the Baptismal Font) after the Saturday 10.00am Mass only.
The Cathedral Office, Pauline Books & Media and the Cloister Café will be open as usual.

An Evening with John Grundy

As part of the celebrations to commemorate the Bi-Centenary of the birth of AWN Pugin which takes place this year, the Friends of St Mary's Cathedral will host An Evening with John Grundy on Tuesday 20 March, at 7.00pm. The architectural historian and local broadcaster will give an illustrated talk entitled North East Churches Throughout the Ages. In his talk, John will refer to the Victorian era, in particular the work of AWN Pugin, and also look at the influences of the Anglo-Saxon period and the Northern Saints. Tickets (£3) for the Talk only are still available (tickets for the Talk and wine and canapé reception following the Talk are now sold out). Tickets are available at the back of church following Sunday Masses or from the Cathedral Office during the week.

Church's Teaching on Marriage

At Masses this weekend, we receive a Letter from Archbishops Vincent Nichols and Peter Smith on behalf of the Bishops' Conference of England and Wales. It is a statement of our Catholic faith about marriage and issued in the light of the forthcoming consultation by the Government on changing the legal definition of marriage. In the light of this letter, you are asked to consider signing the Coalition for Marriage's online petition. It reads:

"I support the legal definition of marriage which is the voluntary union for life of one man and one woman to the exclusion of all others. I oppose any attempt to redefine it."

The Archbishops also say that after Easter there will be a more detailed leaflet on the Government's consultation itself, for distribution in parishes, to assist Catholics in making their own response to the consultation.

April Concerts in the Cathedral

On Saturday 14 April at 7.15pm The Felling Male Voice Choir & The Low Fell Singers will perform a concert in the Cathedral. Tickets are £7 and a donation from the proceeds for the evening will go to the Children’s Heart Unit, Freeman Hospital (CHUF). Tickets available from the Cathedral Office.

Theatre Royal Performance

A performance of Stephen Nash's Musical play Blown Away, which is produced and directed by Sheila Walker (one of our Cathedral volunteers), will take place in Newcastle Theatre Royal Studio at 7.30pm from Thursday 22 – Saturday 24 March. The play tells the story of a group of People in Bethnal Green, London during the Blitz of 1940-41. We experience their fortitude and humour in the face of death, their determination 'never to surrender', and the songs that kept them going. The Cathedral has secured a limited number of pre booked seats for the performances on Thursday 22 March and Friday 23 March only. A Mass to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of Prayer for the Sick will take place in St. Mary's Cathedral at 11.00am on Saturday 11 February. Bishop Seamus Cunningham will be the principal celebrant and invites those who are sick, doctors, nurses, health and care workers, past Lourdes pilgrims and anyone who is interested to join him.
