Cardinal Hume Memorial Lecture

We are pleased to announce that this year's Cardinal Hume Memorial Lecture entitled "The UK, The Vatican and Diplomacy" will be given by Francis Campbell, the British Ambassador to the Holy See, on Thursday 14 October at 6.00pm in the Cathedral. Before his present post, Mr Campbell was a policy advisor and private secretary to the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. He was also First Secretary at the British Embassy in Rome and a senior policy director with Amnesty International.

Cathedral Re-Opening

After a long nine months, the current phase of the re-development work in the Cathedral is expected to be completed by early September. A Solemn Mass to celebrate the reopening of the Cathedral and the Consecration of the Altar will take place at 11.00am on Saturday 11 September. The Principal Celebrant will be Bishop Seamus Cunningham. A marquee reception will follow the Mass and to facilitate the day, tickets for regular worshippers at the Cathedral will be available on a first come first served basis. CAFOD Aid to Pakistan Appeal

Papal Visit

As part of the visit to Great Britain of Pope Benedict XVI, Holy Mass will be celebrated in Bellahouston Park, Glasgow on Thursday 16 September. For security purposes individual travel is discouraged and places will only be allocated to those travelling in a pre-arranged parish group. If you are interested in travelling by coach to attend the Mass, please complete one of the white slips at the back of the church and return it to the Cathedral Office. The approximate cost of travel is GBP20 per person. Further information regarding times will be available nearer the time.

Heroes Past and Present

The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) have been serving the Armed Forces and their families for 125 years, offering financial, practical and moral support. Heroes Past and Present is a tribute to the men and women to whom we all owe so much. A celebration of the work of our Armed Forces, with a sights and sounds festival themed around flowers and music, will take place from 13 - 18 July. The Future of the Deanery

Tom Millen MBE

We offer our heartfelt congratulations to Tom Millen who has been awarded an MBE for Nursing Mentorship and Learning Disabilities Services in Northumberland. Tom officially retired in 2007 after working for thirty three years in Specialist Learning Disability Services and Team Management of Joint Social Care and Health Care Teams. He returned to work part time to undertake specialist tasks for Northumberland Health Care Trusts. Tom gives much of his spare time to the Cathedral as an altar server, member of the hospitality team and as Safeguarding representative (child and vulnerable adult protection) for the Cathedral. We extend our very best wishes on this well deserved award.

Fr John celebrated Mass here in the Cathedral on Saturday and enjoyed a reception for his friends and family in the Cloister Cafe. Prayerful good wishes also to Fr Marc Lydon–Smith who was ordained to the priesthood at St Aloysius Church, Hebburn on Saturday 12 June. Fr Marc will be joining the Cathedral clergy in September. The route will pass Hallington and Colt Crag Reservoirs and Northumberland's oldest church (built around 1100). Friends Visit to Harrogate

A visit to Harrogate by the Friends of the Cathedral has been arranged for Saturday 10 July. The visit coincides with a flower festival organised by The National Association of Flower Arranging Societies (NAFAS), in which our very own Judith Clancy will be participating. The visit will comprise two payment levels: if you wish to attend the festival the cost of the day will be GBP22, to include coach travel and entry into the event; alternatively if you wish to travel to Harrogate for the day without attending the festival the cost will be GBP10 for the coach. Places are limited therefore bookings will be on a first come first served basis. The coach will depart the Cathedral at 8.00am and will return at approximately 6.00pm. If you wish to attend please contact the Cathedral Office with a non-refundable deposit of GBP10.

Corpus Christi Procession

This year the Diocesan Corpus Christi Procession will take place on Sunday 6 June at Ushaw College, Durham at 3.00pm. The day will be led by Bishop Seamus Cunningham and will begin with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in St Cuthbert's Chapel from 2.00pm - 3.00pm, followed by the procession. Children are invited to wear their First Holy Communion clothes and new members will be admitted into the Association of the Eucharist at 4.00pm in the Chapel. Please bring a picnic tea - juice and tea will be provided.

Student Christian Movement

The 2010 Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes (30 July – 5 August) is in desperate need of nurses to accompany the forty sick pilgrims who wish to go to Lourdes. At present there are only ten nurses registered and, in order to avoid disappointment for the sick pilgrims, a further ten nurses are needed. A series of First Thursday Talks under the title of Reflecting on Scripture is taking place in St Vincent's Diocesan Offices, St. Cuthbert's House, West Road, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Using Gift Aid means that for every GBP1 you give the Cathedral receives 28 pence from the Inland Revenue – and it doesn’t cost you a thing! St Cuthbert’s Care - Lenten Alms

As we enter the Lenten Season of reflection, St Cuthbert's Care has launched this year's charity fundraising appeal for those communities in the Diocese suffering the greatest hardship. All donations received during the Lent Appeal this year will be used to fund the St Cuthbert's Care mobile charity clothes distribution service, which directly helps the poor and disadvantaged in our region.

Praying with those who are homeless

It is proposed to form a group which will pray with and for those who are homeless and in difficulty. The idea is to have members of the group who will go into the city centre during the day to reach out, to meet and to pray with those who are in this situation. At the same time other members of the group will stay in St Joseph's Gateshead, in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed during those hours. If you would like to know more about this Initiative, please come to an introductory meeting on Tuesday 9 March after 12.00pm Mass at St Joseph's Presbytery, High West Street, Gateshead (opposite the Gateshead Metro station).

This year's Lent Course is a shared exploration of the Gospel according to Luke along the lines of The Big Read suggested by the Bishop of Durham, the Rt Rev'd Tom Wright. Meetings will be held on Thursdays in February and March, gathering at 7.00pm for refreshments followed by activities and discussion between 7.30pm – 9.00pm. Praying with those who are homeless

It is proposed to form a group which will pray with and for those who are homeless and in difficulty. The idea is to have members of the group who will go out into the City Centre and reach out to those who are in this situation. At the same time other members of the group will stay in St Joseph's, Gateshead in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed during those hours. The Joseph Cowan Centre

The Joseph Cowan Healthcare Centre, 8 Wilfrid Street, Byker, is a Health and Social Care resource for people who are homeless. The facilities include health advice, a project nurse and community psychiatry nurse. On Sundays 24 and 31 January, members of the Cathedral community are invited to donate items such as teabags, coffee, drinking chocolate, long life milk and fruit juices, sugar, and all forms of toiletries. There will be boxes at the back of church following all Sunday Masses this Sunday 24 January and next Sunday 31 January.

A day of events to mark Poverty and Homelessness Action Week will take place at St Thomas's Church, Haymarket on Saturday 6th February 11.00am – 2.00pm. There will be an opportunity to find out more about credit unions, ethical banking and energy companies, to sample winter produce from the community gardens and to hear more about how to help people who are homeless. The Church Action on Poverty AGM will take place at 11.30am, followed by a few inspirational thoughts on 'Doing the Economy differently', then a shared lunch at 12.30pm. If possible please take an item of food to share.

As we face another winter of economic recession, St Cuthbert's Care Advent Appeal again focuses on help for those communities in the Diocese who are suffering the greatest hardship. The charity's 5p Bus has been in operation for a year and is continuing to offer donated clothes for five pence per item at locations across the region including residential units for older people, children’s centres, community projects and refugee services. St Cuthberts Care Gift Aid envelopes for your donations to help fund the bus are available in church now. Thank you for your support. A Taste of Advent and Christmas

A Taste of Advent and Christmas will take place next weekend in the Cloister Café and the Pauline Books and Media Centre. The event will include the sale of Christmas gifts, decorations and seasonal food and products. Cathedral Renovation

The Diocesan Trustees have approved the appointment of Stephen Easten Building Ltd as the main contractor for the Cathedral Phase One works which are now due to commence on Monday 23rd November.

From this date and until further notice please note the following arrangements:

The Cathedral will be closed during the week but will re-open each Sunday for Masses at the usual times.
Monday - Friday Mass will be at 8.00am in the Cloister.
There will be no weekday 12.05pm Mass and no 10.00am Mass on Saturday mornings in the Cathedral.
Monday - Saturday there will be Mass at 12.15pm at St Andrew's, Worswick Street.
Mass Intentions requested for particular 12.05pm weekday & Saturday 10.00am Masses will be offered by one of the Cathedral priests at the 12.15pm Mass in St Andrew's.
Confessions will be at St Andrew's, Worswick Street on Saturdays, 11.00am – 12 noon, and 5.15 – 5.45pm.
There are also Confessions at St Dominic's, New Bridge Street on Saturdays, 10.30am – 11.00am & 5.00pm – 5.30pm.
The Cathedral Office, the Cloister Cafe and Pauline Books & Media will operate as usual during the work period.

Important Parish Meeting

Bishop Cunningham has invited all parishes in the deanery to hold a meeting to discuss the future deployment of priests and the organisation of parishes within the deanery. Realistically, in years to come (and sooner than we might think) there are going to be fewer priests available to serve in our parishes, so we need to consider now the implications of this. The meeting will be an opportunity to consider some or all of the following:

The consequences of having fewer priests:
(i) Fewer Masses - how many Masses do we really need in our parish?
(ii) Twinning/clustering / amalgamating parishes?
How to develop and encourage vibrant parishes with or without a resident priest.
The training of lay people for leadership and ministries in parishes.
The financial and practical administration of parishes.

Our meeting will be held jointly with St Andrew's, Worswick Street on Wednesday 4th November at 7.00pm in the Cloister Cafe and all parishioners are welcome to attend.

Friends Retreat Day

The day will begin at Carmel Convent, Darlington where Fr Clement Lee and one of the Carmelite sisters will welcome us for Morning Prayer and a short presentation on the life of an enclosed Carmelite. We will then depart for The Holy Family Church for Mass and a spiritual talk by Fr Clement. Travel is by coach and the cost of the day is £10. In preparation for the 5 year phasing-in period for Vetting & Barring Registration, which is linked to the date of your most recent Disclosure, the next Diocesan CRB checks will commence from 12th October 2009, beginning with those people originally cleared in 2006 and then continuing over the next 12 months to include those cleared in 2007 and subsequent years. This is an essential part of the invaluable contribution made by our volunteers. Anyone aged 18 or over wishing to undertake a voluntary role in the Cathedral must complete CRB clearance and your cooperation in this matter is much appreciated.
